The Crazy Language

English is an international language. It is the most widely spoken language in the earth. It has a vocabulary of over a million words. The maximum numbers has been written in English. Even in India,  because of diversity in language,  it has become important as a link language.

To us, who began to learn English, it appears somehow strange and crazy. It is quite amusing to note that…….
There is no custard or apple in custard apple and neither pine nor apple in a pineapple. Such paradoxes are plenty in the language.

A boxing ring is in shape of square.

A Guinea pig is neither a pig nor is it from Guinea.

When writers can write why can’t authors auth and fingers fig.

The plural of tooth is teeth, but the plural of booth isn’t beeth.

One goose, 2 geese then why can’t  1 train 2 trainees or  1 mouse 2 meese.

We can make amends, not not one amend.

A vegetarian eats vegetables then what do you think will a humanitarian will eat.

If pros and cons are opposites the  congress should be  the opposite of progress.

When I wind my watch,  I start it,  When I wind up the article, I end it.

  1. I like this post! English is an interesting language with rules that are puzzling.

Teeth instead of saying tooths is called regularization. It’s making an irregular word, regular.
Another example is: She does runs. You wouldn’t say the irregular form of does, which is irregular third person singular. Also, there isn’t a need for the “s” in runs because it’s already understood that the person is running, which is a redundancy. That why is some English dialects, The third person singular “s” is omitted, which is called simplification.
